What is Wen Lambo?
The cryptocurrency community is a welcoming one, but it’s also sprouted its own evolving language that, to newcomers, may seem completely alien at first.
So, if you’re new to the crypto community and wondered what on earth “wen lambo” means, don’t worry. Here, we briefly explain the meaning and origin of the catchphrase and help you figure out how you can insert it into your own conversations.
What Does “Wen Lambo” Mean?
According to Business Insider, the term “wen lambo” translates to “when will you buy a Lamborghini?” In layman’s terms, it’s a way to ask someone when they’ll get rich off of their crypto holdings – rich enough to buy a ridiculously expensive car like a Lamborghini.
Whenever a new cryptocurrency coin is launched, you won’t be hard-pressed to find someone uttering the phrase to ask when the coin will be worth enough for holders to buy the luxury vehicle. It’s become meme fodder as well – one of the most popular examples is a photo of Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin, Photoshopped to look like Jesus holding a red Lamborghini.
Why is the term spelled that way? A lot of cryptocurrency enthusiasts are also into memes and hang out in online spaces like crypto Twitter, 4chan, and Discord servers. In these communities, people seem particularly drawn to doge speak, a type of internet slang that involves using two-word phrases shortened in a kind of “baby talk” way that supposedly represents how dogs might speak to humans.
If you’ve seen those Shiba Inu memes with phrases like “Much amaze. Wow”, then you’ll know what we’re talking about. In the same style, “When will you buy a Lamborghini” is playfully shortened to “wen lambo”.
Where Did The Phrase “Wen Lambo” Originate?
“Wen lambo” may be popular among NFT holders and crypto trader types, but the phrase can actually be traced back to the early days of Bitcoin, the biggest cryptocurrency in the world.
In 2018, during the Consensus Investment Conference in New York, crypto exchange BitMEX rented three Lamborghinis and had them parked outside the venue to signal to attendees that there were crypto investors inside. Since that day, this high-end car has become something of a status symbol for crypto enthusiasts.
Some people also use the term derisively, pointing out that a big chunk of people who are drawn to Lamborghinis are often young types who enjoy “high-risk and high-reward situations” and tend to be brash and cocky. In other words, they’re crypto bros who initiate and fall for get-rich-quick schemes like crypto trading scams and Ponzi schemes.
Final Thoughts
If you’re new to the cryptocurrency space, it can be easy to get lost in the lingo. Just remember, lambo = Lamborghini, as in the luxury car that’s often associated with people who’ve “made it”.
